I’m writing this post in New York City, but it does not live in New York City.

It lives in New York City and Chicago and San Francisco…and Mumbai and Capetown and Shanghai.

This post lives wherever someone reads it.

Social media is global. And cultural. In fact, everything you publish to the web can, with very few exceptions, be viewed by anyone in the world with internet access. It’s not called the World Wide Web for nothing.

Ignore this at your own peril.

Next week will mark my four month anniversary at Attention. As my boss Dana likes to say, “No one on the global team has a US passport”. This was true up until about a month ago, when we hired Varun, an American citizen. (Please don’t tell immigration).
So how exactly did I end up working for a social media agency in New York all the way from Italy, you ask?

This week in social sees Facebook user growth slow while Google+ post its best traffic numbers to date and Tumblr introduces a new private messaging feature

You may recall the epic reunion between Barbie and Ken last February  – I know I do. I saw the campaign everywhere, from billboards and blogs to Magnolia Bakery, and I was impressed.

At the time I was a graduate student, studying media and popular culture, and looking for a way to translate my interests (and life long Barbie fandom) into a job. With this in mind, I wanted to find out more about this highly visible and exciting campaign. Some Internet sleuthing led me to the blog of an Attention employee who had posted about Barbie and Ken’s roman-tech courtship.  A few email exchanges later, and I found myself in the Attention offices interviewing for an internship.

Working and playing in the social media space, it’s easy to get caught up in looking forward to the next big launch.

Some of us have multiple monitors tuned to Mashable or The Verge, waiting to see what the relaunch of Color will bring or what the predictions of the predictions of next year’s iPhone predictions will be. Sure, all of that is fun and exciting, and to be honest this future-facing attitude is what keeps our industry moving forward at a rapid pace, but before we all get too busy looking forward to 2012 let’s take a second to remember why we do this in the first place.

Ever wondered what its like to work at an agency? We’ve railed against infographics in the past but this one from Big Orange Slide  gives a scary accurate look at the people who make up your favorite agencies.

In a recent interview with AdExchanger, Attention Founder & CEO, Curtis Hougland discusses the agency, social media marketing and more.

AdExchanger.com: In social media, what is the unique approach to addressing audiences that isn’t present in other digital or traditional channels?

CH: We can actually engage in conversations, which is the Holy Grail for marketers. This conversation occurs in the context of explicit messages, and implicit behaviors within the channel. In this way we can humanize our customers and prospects by understanding their purchase intent, mood, and past behavior through not only art, but also science and data. Social marketers really could not have said this a year ago.

The New York Marriott Marquis was abuzz last night for the 2011 New York Social Media Stars awards ceremony, presented by The Social Media Society, to honor the people behind great social media profiles and campaigns in the New York area.

In a earlier tweet, Curtis said of the award:

Among the 12 individuals honored was Attention CEO and Founder Curtis Hougland. As Curtis was traveling abroad in Italy, Attention Partner Jake Fisher accepted the award on Curtis’ behalf and thanked the Social Media Society for the honor and the 100+ Attention employees for their hard work.

On September 14th, Attention client Monster High launched their own creeperific version of Social Superlatives to encourage excitement among avid Facebook fans about the Back to School season and kick off Kind Week, which starts September 26. In an effort to continuously promote Monster High’s overarching message about embracing individuality and accepting others, many of the superlatives highlight the guys and ghouls, who are known for their willingness to lend a helping hand.  Monster High fans can download the social superlatives graphic, upload the image to his or her own Facebook page, and tag their friends and family to award them superlatives such as “Biggest Heart,” “Most Likely to Save the Planet,” or “Most Uhhhn-derstanding,” thereby spreading the message that it’s cool to be kind!
